AI in Urban Rail Transport: From Automation to Autonomous Solutions

On April 16, 2026, the Scientific and Technical Council of the Transport Committee held a meeting under the auspices of the International Association of Urban Electric Transport (MAP GET). Denis Minkin, Chairman of the Transport Committee, opened and chaired the session.

Alexander Dmitrenko, Head of the Urban Rail Transport Department at NPS Group, presented a report titled "Automation of Rail Transport Infrastructure Using Artificial Intelligence Technologies."

"The key task for the successful implementation of autonomous urban transport is replacing existing infrastructure with digital systems. We hope our extensive experience in developing and implementing such solutions will enable this technical council to competently shape the future roadmap for autonomous transport in St. Petersburg," noted Alexander Dmitrenko.

Special attention was given to the solutions provided by the NPS Group Signaling Division for urban rail, such as the automated system for tram traffic integrated control, which is currently installed on 135 tram switches across Russia.
